The sleeper of the pack

How much sleep does your pet need?

does my pal sleep, really?

I’ll look at Walter and Olivia sleeping in the corner while I’m working and wonder what kind of doggie dreams are rattling around in their little heads. They seem to sleep with such enthusiasm, I wonder sometimes if they’re sleeping too much.

Compare that to Taz, our feline friend, and our pups seem like amateur sleepers only. It seems like most of the time the only thing that will rattle the cat out of REM state is the sound of the electric can opener. Then after a delicious, exhausting meal, right back to the zzzzz’s.

Humans need sleep – pets need more

But considering the sleep recommendations of the CDC, it’s not surprising that we humans don’t understand the sleep needs of our pets. Sure, newborns and toddlers require 12 or more hours of sleep, but the optimal sleep pattern for adults is only 7-9 hours compared to 12-16 on average for dogs and 15 or so for cats.

But why?

It’s in their nature. That’s why. Cats and dogs are naturally and physiologically predators hardwired to wake and chase at a moments surprise. Their sleep is much lighter than ours and without so much deep sleep, they require longer durations of rest to stay healthy, happy and ready to go when you grab the leash for a walk.
